Jeremiah 11:18-23  God is My Defense

People from Anathoth, Jeremiah’s hometown, conspired to kill Jeremiah.  They threatened him, “Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, or you will die by our hand.” (vs21)  They worshiped Baal and did not want to hear the truth of God.  People, who worshiped idols – be it false religion, money, fame, gambling, drugs,… – have always been totally against the truth in the Word of God to the point of despising anything/anyone related to God and even killing prophets, apostles, missionaries, and so on.

All Christians face threats from Satan and evil all around us in many different forms.  To some, threats are physical like those Christians who are persecuted in Syria and Iraq today.  To others, threats come in the form of temptations, lies, and fear.  Some threats from Satan can come through people you know or close to you.

Are you facing any threats right now?

This passage tells us three important truths.

1.  When you face threats against your faith in God, many times you will not know – “I did not know it was against me they devised schemes.” vs (19).  But the truth is God knows every time.  He may not reveal it to you like He did to Jeremiah in verse 18, but He knows every time.  That means God will prepare you for it, carry you through it, and grow your trust in God through the suffering.

2.  “Behold I will punish them.” (vs22) God told Isaiah in Isaiah 35:3-4:

Strengthen the feeble hands,

     steady the knees that give way;
say to those with fearful hearts,
    “Be strong, do not fear;
your God will come,
    he will come with vengeance;
with divine retribution
    he will come to save you.

God will defend you and punish those who come against you, when you are living for God’s purpose.  With this promise, God allowed Jeremiah to continue to preach the Word of God to them.

3.  Cling to God and to God’s purpose for your life.  Trust Him as you seek to live out your faith.  This does not apply just to pastors, missionaries, and spiritual leaders.  This applies to you, even when you are struggling to understand what God is doing through your suffering, defeat, and pain; when you have lost faith in God and crying in the dark to find Him again; and when you are making a new commitment to follow God.  Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, God is there.  One thing that God requires of you is your trust.

            But, O LORD of hosts, who judges righteously,

                        who tests the heart and the mind,

            let me see your vengeance upon them,

                        for to you have I committed my cause.

(Jeremiah 11:20 ESV)
